Kaligo Releases a Bold Music Video for the Song “Viens gans nomira”

The Latvian folk song "Viens gans nomira" ("One Shepherd Died") is originally a children's song in which animals honor the deceased shepherd by performing a funeral ritual. Inspired by the lyrics, Kaligo’s vocalist Diāna Logina has created a new musical interpretation, giving it a deeper and more somber tone.

Diāna shares: “In my daily work with children, I emphasize learning Latvian folk songs and other cultural values. One of the songs that particularly stands out in spring is ‘Viens gans nomira’ – it has a light and playful melody and features many birds and animals commonly found in Latvia.

The funeral ritual is one of the three main life events in human tradition, and this song depicts it with a gentle tone. However, reading the lyrics, I wondered – what if it were interpreted differently? This time, with a much darker atmosphere that I felt would fit naturally into Kaligo’s repertoire and reveal a new side of the band.”

The music video was directed by the band's bassist and producer Jānis Narbuts. “While working on the song’s recording, I immediately had a vivid visual vision – the music itself dictated how it should look. Since the idea was quite daring, I had to carefully present it to the rest of the band. Luckily, I had thought it through so thoroughly that I could convincingly share my vision with both the band and the video director Jānis Štāls,” says Jānis.

The video captures the song's atmosphere in a unique blend of fantasy and reality. At its center is the dead shepherd, whose death connects the spirit world with reality, allowing a glimpse into a mystical ritual. Animal-like beings help the shepherd transition to the afterlife, while the messenger of death – the bagpiper – symbolically casts a veil of smoke over reality, summoning spirits and opening the path to the beyond. Each character has a role and mission – but are they good or evil? That is left to the viewer’s interpretation.
Kaligo is a Latvian band formed in 2023. In October 2024, they released their debut album “Pirmais pērkons” (“The First Thunder”).

The group includes Diāna Logina (vocals, various instruments), Marita Karpa (accordion), Edijs Ostapko (guitar), Kārlis Bērziņš (keyboard), Jānis Narbuts (bass), and Kristaps Karps (drums, percussion, vocals). Their repertoire consists of Latvian folk songs, world music, and original compositions inspired by folklore. Kaligo plays with a mix of genres, creating eclectic and creative arrangements that freely blend popular and heavy music styles with folk elements.
